DOCTORSUPDATES have evolved from biannual anaesthetic meetings which for some years have been held in the Alps in the winter and by the Mediterranean sea in the autumn. The first Anaesthesia Update was held in 1989 in the beautiful French Alpine resort of La Clusaz with less than 50 delegates and very little snow. Since then the meeting has been moved higher in the Alps to Belle Plagne which at the level of 2050m has guaranteed snow and now over 300 delegates attend each year.
More recently other specialties - Radiology, Urology, Plastic Surgery and Trauma and Orthopaedics have been enjoying a similar multidisciplinary educational week. Academic standards have consistently been high with a mixture of invited speakers, volunteered talks, case and research presentations on a variety of aspects of given specialties as well as medicine as a whole. Doctorsupdates apart from bringing the latest developments and evidence based medicine endeavours to broaden the horizons of delegates by covering topics of general interest such as medico-legal matters, clinical governance, internet and patient safety. Practical hands on workshops are also a regular favourites. There is no doubt that the introduction of several different specialties side by side in a congenial location has provided a unique opportunity for exchange of ideas, problem solving and networking.
Since January 2008 we have moved from Belle Plagne to the Congress Centre of Val d’Isere, one of the best ski resorts in the world. In 2009 Val d’Isere was hosting The World Ski Championships.
The Anaesthesia Forum was launched in 1998. The meeting took place in Marbella, Spain and apart from a stimulating scientific programme there was plenty of time for warm weather sporting activities. The event was declared a great success by the participants. The current venue of this annual event is Da Balaia, a Club Med resort in the Algarve. It seems that the combination of academia with golf/swimming/tennis/walking or merely poolside relaxation is a winning formula.
